how did it get its name?

Ancient Chinese used lengths of silk-like money. During the Han Dynasty, soldiers on the frontier were paid with silk. I'd rather NOT get paid with silk.The empire even sent gifts of silk to nomad tribes to buy their loyalty. the silk road got its name from all that silk. no offense to the Chinese silk road or anything, but that's a LOT of silk. i wonder why silk was so important to them.
